I found an interesting Engadget article that discusses how to cut down on the impact that turbulence has on air travel. I was shocked to read that the financial impact is estimated to be $100 Million per year. According to The Weather Company (which IBM acquired in October 2015 for $2 Billion), the $100 Million is incurred from turbulence "due to crew and passenger injuries, unscheduled maintenance, operational inefficiencies, and revenue lost while planes are out of service."
IBM will leverage Watson Artificial Intelligence to automatically grab turbulence data and send out information and alerts to other pilots in the flying in that area through GoGo internet connection.
This is some great leveraging of combined technology. Read more info HERE in the Engadget article.
